The bald statement that the meeting must take place in
British territory isn't to my mind necessarily conclusive.
Surely we all just have to fit in our arrangements
according to the necessities of the case? And in the
present instance I remain of opinion that it would be far
better from every point of view that Teichman (with his
balanced sanity and common sense, plus his knowledge of
the subjects) should be present at the meeting. Honestly
I don't feel you hav made sufficient allowance for the
difficulties inherent in the present situation in China and the complications (staff and otherwise) arising from
the existence of Nanking.
I do trust you won't take offence at my outspokenness?
I need not assure you that I should personally love to pay
you another visit. Another few days at Hong Kong under
your most hospitable roof is what I should like above all
things. And my wife, who had counted on accompanying Anne
so far this autumn, is immensely disappointed. But these
things just can't be helped. I find by experience it is
perfectly futile here ever trying to plan ahead. I just
have to mak arrangements "ad hoc" to fit in with things
as they develop: and seeing that neither Teichman nor I
can go south just now, I still feel a rather more serious
effort might have been made to help us out especially as
Shanghai is only a couple of days distant from Hong Kong!
Yours sincerely,
Sd/ Miles W. Lampson.
